Lorie is a Landscape and Editorial photographer based in Ottawa, ON. She has already been published and featured with Calvin Klein during their "My Calvins campaign." She is truly an inspiration for aspiring female photographers, and has a drive/passion that shines through her work. Meeting Lorie has been an absolute blessing, and getting to know her more on a personal level revealed to me what a kind and loving spirit she has. Lorie will most definitely go far, and I can't wait to see where her passion leads her.
What do you do?
I’m a local photographer here in Ottawa, I focus more on landscape and editorial photography.
When did you know you wanted to pursue what your doing now?
I knew that this is what I wanted to do when I started being around more artists. It got me reflecting on what my passion was and what I was good at. I had no idea at the time but I eventually noticed that picking up a camera and capturing moments is something that I loved doing and had an eye for. I think it has always been what I wanted to do. I’ve been taking photos with my phone as soon as I got a flip phone with a camera. I would capture from different angles and start editing with just the edit option on the phone. I also knew when my mentor Thierry lend me his camera and I just kind of ran off with that.
Is there anyone in your field that you look up to?
I’ve never really looked up to any professional photographers, I get a lot of my inspiration from photography books or editorials. I look up to people who are focused and who follow their passion. There are three people that I could think of right now which would be my sister Pilard, Theirry; he was like my brother/mentor, and Tupac. Those are the people that I look up to.
Do you or did you have a mentor?
I did, he’s more like a brother now - Thierry Kasende from Pride and Ego.
Where do you see yourself/ your business in the next 5-10 years?
I see myself travelling around the world and capturing the raw essence of Mother Earth. Capturing sunsets, sunrises, or going to underdeveloped countries and capturing people in their environment.
Do you recommend a mentor?
Definitely! If you don’t have people around you who are focused, you’re not going to stay focused. Having a mentor is something that is super essential for an entrepreneur, artist or just anybody. They help keep you focused and inspired; they are definitely the best thing.
What advice would you give to someone that is trying to pursue their dreams?
Don’t give up! And when it seems like it’s the end usually it’s the next stepping stone.
Why do you love what you do?
It gives me life. It helps me express myself, it’s literally taking how I view the world and putting into like real life. I could physically look through a lens and capture what I see and put it out.
Who is your motivation to keep going?
The three people who I mentioned before, my sister Pilard, Tupac and Thierry. And mama of course.
If you had the opportunity to work or collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
Alive it would be Rihanna, and J Cole, and dead it would be Tupac again lol. I choose Rihanna because I’ve seen so many editorials and photo shoots of her and she can literally pull off any look. It could be like a thuggish boyish look, or super classy and she rocks it and brings every emotion to the photo. J Cole, I would just love to capture him in his element because I believe and trust his art. Tupac well he’s my idol and inspires me. I would only want to collaborate with him just to be in his environment, not really to take a picture.
What is the one thing you can’t leave the house with minus your cell phone?
My books, I read more of self development and spiritual/religion.
Do you have a quote or a message that you remind yourself to keep motivated?
I have it actually written on a post it on my wall, and I see it everyday. It says “Be still, and know”. I believe it’s from the bible but Thierry shared it with me and it has helped me stay centered ever since.
